Vegan in Fuerteventura: Corralejo, the North Coast

The restaurants that we like best are mentioned first.

The family Cantatore (baobab), the chef of Past & Future and the Romanian waitress of H20 were so incredibly nice that I felt at home there.

Completely vegan:

Baobab Juice Bar Casa Vegetariana:

Calle José Segura Torres 14 (Plaza de Los Niños), Monday-Saturday: 11:00 AM - 04:00 PM, closed on Sunday

We have already been to Corralejo last year. The quality is still the highest standard and the owners are very cordial.

We have mostly drunken the Isla-Smoothie (pineapple, banana, mango, lemon, ginger and coconut milk), the India-Smoothie (pineapple, banana, curcuma, ginger, cinnamon, black papper and coconut milk) and gorilla-milk. But the detox-water and the Baby-Smoothie (tastes like muesli which is made of oats) were also really tasty.
If they serve sugar to a drink, it is high-quality sugar.

They have a daily menue (often glutenfree), wraps (most are glutenfree), sandwiches and homemade cheese with salad.
Before the daily menue is served you will get some bread, olive oil, vinegar, salt and pepper as amuse gueule. Once they even had glutenfree flatbread with high-quality ingredients like flax- and chiaseeds. I got a really big portion of this flatbread. :)

My favorite wrap is the Jamaica-Wrap (mango, sprouts, tofu, red cabbage, salad, pear, avocado and senf dressing). They also have a very hearty wrap which reminded us of German cuisine.
The daily menues were: rice-broccoli-dumplings with a mixed salad and mayonnaise; marinated tempeh with mango dressing, rice, mixed vegetables and seeds; incredibly tasty marinated and smoked tofu with salad, persimmon chutney and couscous with pumpkin, pomegranate, dried fruits and herbs; and so on.

We mostly ate juicy glutenfree apple muffins. The chocolate-vanilla-muffi was also very tasty.
A very nice Englishwoman has posted a photo of the cocolate cake which captures its fluffiness and creaminess: https://www.instagram.com/toriapardoe/

There is also much artwork to be seen. It is beautiful, colorful, friendly and compassionate art.

If you want to eat healthy, organic and very tasty food you should definitely visit Baobab.

Restaurant Past & Future:
Calle Almirante Nelson 3, 35660 Corralejo, Monday, Tuesday & Thursday 06:00 P.M. - 11:00 P.M., Friday & Saturday 06:00 P.M. - 12:00 P.M., Sunday 12:00 - 03:00 P.M. and 07:00 P.M. - 11:00 P.M., closed in Wednesday
https://www.facebook.com/past.and.future.fuerteventura/

This restaurant is brand-new (opened on July 21st, 2017). It offers very creative, varied and tasty food and the chef is really nice. It was a very difficult decision, if Baobab or Past & Future should be mentioned first.

The menu is unusually big and the portions of tapas are often bigger than we were used to. You should visit several times to try as much as possible.

They have soups, a multitude of tapas (some of them can be turned into a main dish by adding basmati rice), bosna dürüm, tortilla "chili sin carne", bread with dips, pasta, salads and desserts.

Everything was very tasty. Here is an overwiew of what we have eaten: an incredibly authentic bosna dürüm (with seitan-sausage, onion, mustard, curry, parsley, marjoram and schopska-salad); antipasti with dip (with fresh rosmary, roasted zucchini, eggplant, mushrooms, bell pepper, dried tomatoes, olives and aioli); very tasty eggsalad without eggs (with glutenfree noodles, chickpeas, peas, leek and mayonnaise); Canarian papas arrugadas with dips; Cuban rice (with beans, onion, garlic, tomato, bell pepper and cumin); amazingly tasty"Atlantis" spaghetti (with algaes, carrots, capers, parsley, leek and tomatoes); Indonesian noodles (glutenfree spaghetti, roasted tofu, ginger-lime-barbecue.dressing, carrots and leek); fried Canarian plantain with garlic-lime-dressing; sweet mousse au chcolat (dark chocolate, tofu, soy cream and dates) and tiramisu (with homemade glutenfree sponge cake, margarine, amaretto and coffee).
Moreover, we got two tasty pieces of Spanish tortilla, because the chef loves to experiment and to develop new recipes.
We always got some bread with a really great garlic dip or freshly made pesto.
We always ordered ginger tea with orange and mint.
There are many more options that I would have liked to try. For example: oyter mushrooms with Canarian rum, allspice, star anise, onions and ginger.

If you like very tasty, creative food and the very best glutenfree bread this is the right place for you to visit.

H2O Chillout Bar Cafe:
Calle de la Milagrosa 29, Monday-Sunday 9:00 A.M. - 05:00 P.M.
https://www.facebook.com/H2oBarCafe/

Halfway between Baobab and Past & Future you can eat and drink at the H2O Chillout Bar Cafe.
It is bright and colorful.

Until midday (twelve o'clock) you can order various breakfast menues. Andi had a breakfast with tea, a slice of bread, scrambled chickpea, tomatoes, hummus and a sausage (prabably made of seitan). It was not satisfying. Luckily you can also order from the regular menue if you are very hungry.

We especially liked the burgers (normal or double decker). If you order a double decker burger you can choose two different patties. Andi has taken lentil and beetroot. I had a normal burger with a pumpkin pattie. Additionally to the patties the burger also contains vegetables (for example avocado, sprouts, cucumber, tomato, salad) and mayonnaise.
The burger bun can be ordered glutenfree (additional charge: 60 cent). It is quite fluffy and reminded me of white bread.

I ordered the Salento-Salad with sundried tomatoes, walnuts (a bit rancid), tofu, grilled zucchini, salad and (in my case: glutenfree) white bread.

Andi has ordered bruschetta with olive paste and cherry tomatoes.
He also ordered the Antigua-sandwich with avocado, sprouts, bell peppers, salad and bread with seeds. Moreover, we have eaten sanwiches with olive paste, tofu, tomato and salad.

We have drunken the Exotic-Smoothie (mango, papaya and pineapple), Sunny-Juice (mango, carrot, orange), very tasty rooibos tea and a smoothie with dates, coconut and rice milk.
If they serve sugar to a drink, it is high-quality sugar.

When I was ill the waitress put a note with her best wishes and some nice doodles into the bag which contained my burger.

If you like burgers, sandwiches and similar food with a great smoothie you should definitely come here.

D.Sanchez Fresh Food:

Calle Submarino 3, Mo-Sa: 19:00-23:00, sonntags geschlossen
https://www.happycow.net/reviews/dsanchez-fresh-food-fuerteventura-60375

Here you will get street food and smoothies that you can compose yourself.
The fries with ketchup were very good last year. This year the fries were too greasy. We ordered them with hummus, which was a quite meager portion.
But the burger tasted much better than last year. Last year we have ordered burgers with glutenfree bread. They tasted like paper.
This time I ate something which was decribed as lasagna. It was more like a juicy mix of ratatouille and moussaka (eggplant, tomato, cheese and herbs). Andi helped me to eat it, because it was way too juicy for me, although it was tasty.
The counseling was very scarce, but this time it was sufficient.

You can choose between many different brands of beer.
The atmosphere is not very friendly, but there are chalk drawings on the chairs, windows and walls.

Delicias y Namàstè Vegan Restaurant Gluten Free & Juice Bar

Vegan Options:

Spices – Indian Tandoori Restaurant:
Avenida Ntra. Sra. Del Carmen, 64 Local 18, 19, Monday-Sunday 01:30 P.M. - 11:30 P.M.

There are new tenants at this restaurant. They are very honest! When my husband was in a hurry he left obviously too much money there. They kept it and returned the excess amount when we visited the next time. Thank you!

The food is very tasty. We often went there in the evening, because Indian cuisine is mostly easy to digest.
You can choose a sauce with vegetables or legumes (for example Tikka Masala) and some rice (for example with garlic, vegetables or mushrooms).
We like to eat papadam for starter. These crunchy pieces are served with onions, sweet sauce and a sauce which probably contains milk. I did not ask, because we normally ordered it for take away which is not accompanied by sauces.
My husband has ordered a menue with samosas and a little bit of mixed salad.

Fresh pressed orange juice is really tasty. You can get it at many places, but you will not get such tasty food at many places.

If you like tasty, easy to digest food this is the place to go.

La Bodega Canaria:
Calle Marítima 22-24 (Esq. Plaza Félix Estevéz), Monday-Sunday 10:00 A.M. - 12:00 P.M.
https://www.google.com/maps/place/la+bodega+canaria/

While eating at La Bodega Canaria you can watch the sea, or listen to live music in the evening.
The waiters are friendly.
We have always ordered fresh pressed orange juice without ice.
Last year we have eaten papas arrugadas there, so we asked for it again. They made it especially for us, although it was removed from the menue. That was really nice!
The vegetable paella is very, very tasty.

Pizzeria Pepperone:

Their furniture is very colorful and bright.
They have a small glutenfree pizza. It was the most authentic glutenfree pizza that I have ever eaten.

La Factoria:
Calle Marítima, 9, Monday-Sunday 12:30 A.M. - 11:30 P.M.

You can watch the sea while eating at La Factoria.
We have eaten papas arrugadas with green mojo sauce and a rather flavorless vegetable soup with roasted white bread. The soup contained various vegetables, lentils, beans and mushrooms.

Bombay Masala – Indian Restaurant:
, in the music square, Monday-Sunday: 12:00 A.M. - 12:00 P.M., free home delivery service in Corralejo and Tamaragua
https://www.google.com/maps/place/Bombay+Masala/

The food was tasty.
The walls are filled with posters which show pictures if India.

Sanus:
Calle Anzuelo 4, Monday-Saturday 06:00 P.M. - 11:00 P.M., closed on Sunday

We did not enter because it was quite a hustle and bustle, and we did not really want to sit inside.

Citrus:
Calle Anzuelo 1, Monday-Saturday 9:00 A.M. - 12:00 P.M., closed on Sunday

You always have to ask if meals contain dairy products.Yaki-Tori (noodles with roated vegetables and soy ginger garlic sauce) and Nasi Goreng (rice with vegetables, mango sauce and Indonesian spices) are tasty.
They serve good (sometimes quiet sour) smoothies.

I love Pizza:
, Thursday-Tuesday: 6:00 A.M.- 11:30 P.M., closed on Wednesday

It is a small eatery. They have a delivery service.
Andi has ordered a tasty vegan pizza.
The atmosphere was a bit strange when we were there, but the delivery boy has greeted us very friendly when he saw us on the street.

El Olivo – restaurant – gastrobar:
Calle Principal/Hauptstraße, Centro Commercial Plaza, Monday-Sunday 12:30 A.M. - 11:30 P.M.
http://www.elolivorestaurant.com/

We were not served what we had ordered, but it was vegan. The waiter was very arrogant and unfriendly as soon as we had ordered our meal.

On the beach – restaurant & cocktail bar
Calle Isla de Lobos

They have got sea view. Their menue contains a vegan burger and probably vegan salads. One salad consists of cauliflower, broccoli, zucchini, soy sprouts, carrots, sesame and ginger. Another one consists of cherries, beet, cucumber, onion, avocado, corn, salad, carrot and olive oil dressing.

Land of Freedom – Restaurant & Tapas Bar:
, Mi-Mo: 18:00-23:00, dienstags geschlossen

We where there last year. They were nearly sold out and really obliging.
They gave me water and bread with red mojo for free, although I said that it was totally ok that they were nearly sold out.
Andi has eaten a variety of tapas with matching wine.

 Fails:

Restaurante Sotavento ()
You can watch the sea from there, but the mojo (which accompanies the papas arrugadas) might have contained milk. We asked four waiters, but I got the usual problems that I had before I went vegan.
Andi has eaten noodles with vegetables and a bit tomato sauce.

San Borondón ()
You can view a bit of the sea, but I was served meat instead of vegetables. The sause already tasted strange and I complained that the vegetables seem to consist only of strange onions, but my husband said that I should not be so suspicious. But when I took my first bite, I immediately spit it into my napkin. It was obvioulsy ham!
The waiter was very arrogant and did not even appologize.
I got glutenfree noodles at first, but when I got noodles with vegetables they were quite different.
Andi has eaten rice with vegetables. This was quiet good. As starter he had pizza bread with oil, garlic and parsley which smelled great. (I really like garlic.)
The fresh pressed orange juice was very tasty.
That evening another guest also got another pizza than he had ordered.
And I have spent the night at the bathroom, awake, because I felt so sick.

La Playita (

Jaipur (Avda. Grandes Playas – C.C. Cactus, 8)
We did not visit Jaipur this year, because I got something which almost fully consisted of cheese, although they told me that it was vegan. I did not even want to order this meal, but they talked me into it.
I also got very cold prickling water instead of lukewarm still water.
Andi ordered something tasty with okra and a starter.

 Furthermore:

Hyperdino:
At the big Hyperdino in the South of Corralejo () you can get high quality cane sugar (brand: Amagoldi). It still contains lots of molasses (and thus minerals and flavor).
They also have a big selection of vegan milk substitutes. The one which I have taken pictures of tastes surprisingly like cow milk.
They also have some glutenfree cookies, cereals and a popped quinoa cocoa bar. With "Sharkies" I felt full in no time. "Milly Magic" is airy but very hard, so that they do not get mushy while you are eating your muesli.
They have a wide array of legumes. We have bought some precooked legumes and vegetables to make a healthy breakfast.

English Market:

(Thursday and Sunday,

Frutería Frutalia:
C/ Avda. Juan Carlos I N° 35, Mo-Sa: 8:00-21:00, 9:00-14:00
https://www.google.com/maps/place/Fruter%

At this shop you can buy fresh fruits, vegetables, dried spices (for example very aromatic oregano), glutenfree flour and much more.
There is also a health shop nearby.

Hotel Corralejo Beach:
http://www.corralejobeach.com/

We had baked beans and potatoes (too salty and almost cold), mushy bland vegetables, olives, dessicated carrots and oranges for breakfast. It was nice to have so many vegan options, but we decided to eat somewhere else or to cook our own breakfast.
The room was quiet noisy. The staff was really very friendly.

We have cycled from Corralejo to a lighthouse and Cotillo (across the north coast). We have rented some mountain bikes. You will need some protection from the sun. My husband has used a hat and sunscreen, I have used a hat and sunglasses.
From Corralejo to Cotillo there is only a street made of sand and boulder. But it is cooler than the hot asphalt street to Cotillo.
I have needed two liters of water, but I would recommend to drink some more. I have eaten two bananas and a handful of cereals. Andi has drunk one and a half liter of water, one and a half liter of carrot orange juice, and he has eaten four bananas and a nut bar.
We have also cycled there at night. But the lights that we had brought from home were not sufficient to light the way, so we had to drive carefully. It is also much colder at night.

We have ascended the first volcano that you can see from the city. At the top it was so windy that we had to crawl to get to the other side. After that we have also hiked a smaller volcano and went to see some more places.
During all of this time we have only seen two more hikers.
But we have seen goats. You can not see them that often anymore, because they eat the bark of the trees. So, to protect nature, they are not allowed to stray over the whole island anymore.
Each one of us has needed about one and a half liter of water and two to three nut bars. But I would reccomend to drink some more water.
